The head teacher at my school suggested putting on a play for the parents and I volunteered to head the committee in charge of it. I asked for other teachers to join me and we discussed who should do what. I made sure that we made a comprehensive list of everything that needed to be done so nothing could fall between the cracks. I made sure that we met every week to discuss progress on issues such as inviting all the parents and getting the children involved in everything from performing in the play to designing the set and scenery for it. I put in probably a dozen extra hours a week on top of my normal teaching workload to put on the play.

We had lots of comments from very delighted parents on opening night and for several months afterwards.

Remember to prepare for supplementary questions such as:

■ How did you measure progress along the way?

■ Did progress slip against the plan at any point? If so, what did you do to get it back on track again?

■ What were the biggest obstacles that you faced along the way? How did you tackle these?

■ What did you learn from the experience? What would you do differently next time?

Can you talk about a time you persisted in the face of adversity?

Employers want to hire people who won’t give up the moment they come across a minor obstacle. Try to pick an example to share with an interviewer of how you kept your motivation up and kept working until you achieved your goals.

We had a problem because our creative team wasn’t talking with the sales team, so the creative team would create stuff that the sales team couldn’t sell. I suggested that we run a workshop to get the creative and sales people together but they didn’t want to. I invited both the sales manager and the creative manager to talk to each other. They were a bit reluctant at first but I kept hammering my point home until they agreed for the three of us to
